Recently, the National Academy of Sciences announced the election of 120 new members in recognition of their distinguished and continuing achievements in original research. Those elected bring the total number of active members to 2,461. Congratulations to Professor Elliot Elson, BEBC honorary professor, on his election to the National Academy of Science!

Prof. Elson is alumni endowed professor emeritus, department of biochemistry and molecular biophysics, Washington University School of Medicine, St. Louis, BEBC honorary professor. He pioneered the development of fluorescence correlation spectroscopy and fluorescence photobleaching recovery (FRAP) in collaboration with Watt Webb of the Cornell Physics Department, and also developed the repetitive pressure perturbation kinetics method. In 1979 he moved to the Department of Biological Chemistry (now the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biophysics) at Washington University School of Medicine, where he has studies the movement and distribution of cell surface proteins, cell motility, and the forces which determine the shapes of cells.

In addition to these accomplishments, Prof. Elson has pioneered the first atomic force microscope instrument in the 1970s, an instrument called the “cell-poker” that was used to perform the first nanoindentation experiments on cells. The first artificial heart tissue was developed in his lab. He continues to serve as mentor and collaborator to many BEBC students, post-docs, and faculty members, and truly embodies BEBC’s spirit of innovation, collaboration, and impact.

The National Academy of Sciences is a private, nonprofit institution that was established in 1863. It recognizes achievement in science by election to membership, and-with the National Academy of Engineering and the National Academy of Medicine-provides science, engineering, and health policy advice to the federal government and other organizations.
